Pekin did it again.

The Dragons won their second straight regional volleyball championship Thursday night, coming from behind to beat Bloomington 20-25, 25-17, 25-18 in the Class 4A Champaign Centennial title match.

With the win, Pekin (29-7) advanced to face Normal Community (31-5) at 6:30 p.m. Monday in a Chatham Glenwood Sectional semifinal match. Big 12 Conference champion Bloomington (24-12) was sent to the sidelines.

The Dragons’ victory Thursday had a familiar feel.

Pekin rallied to knock off host Bloomington last year 15-25, 25-20, 25-18 in a regional final, winning its first regional championship since 1996 and the first in Yvonne Thompson’s tenure as coach.

The consecutive regional titles is a first for the Pekin program. The Dragons have won a total of four regional championships through the years.

Doing well in the postseason is always a big goal for Pekin. That makes the back-to-back regional titles even sweeter.

“Our conference is important, of course, but we always focus on the postseason,” said Thompson, in her 18th season as coach. “We have seven players back from last year’s team, including five seniors, and they wanted to get the feeling of being regional champions again.

“Now they want to go a step further. They don’t feel they’re done.”

Thursday’s loss left Bloomington coach Joe Sanders distraught.

“We made a lot of errors. Hitting errors, unforced errors,” Sanders told the Bloomington Pantagraph.

Hannah Thompson led No. 2 sectional seed Pekin with 16 kills and 13 digs as the Bradley recruit didn’t allow her high school career to end. The Dragons never trailed in the final two sets.

“You’re not going to come back against Hannah Thompson, “ Sanders said. “She’s going to find a way to score enough points for her team, and that’s what she did.”

Molly Flannigan dished out 17 assists for the Dragons and Brooke Sherwood had 16.

Pekin’s Jenna Taphorn had four blocks, Emma Clark had two aces, and Anna McGovern’s 11th kill of the night ended the match.

Leah Anderson had 17 kills and Ellie Weltha had nine kills for No. 3 sectional seed Bloomington.

“Bloomington served aggressively in the first set and we didn’t pass well. We were out of synch,” Yvonne Thompson said. “We did a much better job with our passing in the second and third sets. Bloomington tries to take you out of your offense with their serving.”

Normal Community beat Pekin 25-19, 25-21 last year in a sectional semifinal at Glenwood.

The Dragons won their first Mid-Illini Conference championship last season en route to a program-best 33-3-1 overall record.

They were third in the conference this year behind Limestone and Metamora.
