PEKIN — On Oct. 20, women ages 40-64 years living in Tazewell, Woodford, Peoria and Marshall counties will be eligible for a free mammogram from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Women’s Diagnostic Center at UnityPoint Health - Pekin. Income or insurance will not impact eligibility. Women with Medicare will be scheduled on a different day.
The goal of National Mammography Day is to educate and empower women to take charge of their own breast health. This includes knowing their breasts to identify any changes and scheduling regular visits and annual mammograms with their healthcare providers. In 2015 at this event in Tazewell County, the first case of cancer was diagnosed from a mammogram performed on National Mammography Day.
“I was diagnosed with breast cancer after attending the 2015 Mammography Day at Pekin Hospital. I encourage women to get a mammogram every year,” said Wendy L., the first Tazewell County breast cancer case diagnosed on National Mammography Day. “Walking in with no appointment on Mammography Day was convenient and life-saving for me. The Women’s Diagnostic Center and Tazewell County Health Department were very helpful and encouraging.”
No appointment is necessary. Women should bring proof of age and proof of household income (the last two paycheck stubs for all wage earners in the household). Women with health insurance must also bring their insurance card. Women who have Medicare are not eligible for services on National Mammography Day.
Women who are eligible to receive their mammogram will receive a heel scan bone density screening, door prizes and education on breast and cardiovascular health.
