After sweeping three matches in pool play Friday, the Pekin volleyball team faced a pair of tough foes Saturday in the bracket portion of the O’Fallon Invitational.
Belleville Althoff beat Pekin 25-15, 25-21 in the semifinals and O’Fallon topped Pekin 25-20, 25-18 in the third-place match, leaving the Dragons (27-6) in fourth place in the eight-team tournament.
Pekin’s Hannah Thompson, who had 57 kills in the Dragons’ five matches, was named to the all-tournament team.
“Our girls had a really good weekend,” said Pekin coach Yvonne Thompson. “Althoff and O’Fallon were tough teams, but the good competition will help us get ready for the postseason.”
The Dragons defeated Belleville East 25-17, 25-18, Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran 25-8, 25-15 and Highland 25-14, 25-15 in pool play.
Pekin’s Anna McGovern had three blocks against Belleville East; Emma Clark had three aces against Metro-East; Molly Flannigan had 11 assists against Highland; Maddy Cash and Jenna Taphorn each had five blocks against Althoff; and Hannah Thompson had 10 kills and 10 digs against O’Fallon.
