Ameren Illinois is repairing a gas line at South 4th Street and Broadway Street after it was ruptured Thursday afternoon, resulting in a localized evacuation, according to the City of Pekin’s Facebook page.

A construction crew at 1:14 p.m. Thursday hit a 2-inch gas line while working on the road replacement at the intersection of South 4th and Broadway, according to Mike Guerra, Pekin city engineer. Gas will be back on by 6 p.m. Ameren is notifying customers of the break so they can reset pilot lights. The intersection will be closed until further notice.

The Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators (JULIE), which locates and marks underground utilities before digs occur, was notified of the dig by the construction company. Guerra said sometimes the lines are not exactly under the flags from JULIE or are deeper than expected.

The City said people may notice a strong gas smell. People should avoid the area of 4th and Broadway, and they are also asked to extinguish any flames, including cigarettes.
