1953 - 2017

Martin J. Mackert, 63, of Morton, passed away Wednesdsay, Jan. 4, 2017, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 29, 1953, in Peoria to Otto and Nancy Ethel Johnson Mackert. He married Debra Hayden Dec. 17, 1982, in Pekin.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Stephanie Court and Karen Miller; father; one brother, Mark; four sisters, Julia, Carole, Lori and Mary; and Aunt Rosemary Atkinson, whom he thought of as a second mother, and her four daughters, Lynn, Connie, Kris and Wendy. Also surviving are his dear friends, whom he thought of as brothers, David Thene of Fargo, N.D., and Mark Thene of Buffalo, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Martin served in the United States Marines in 1972.

Martin worked as a supervisor for Clay Equipment, formerly in Morton, during the 1970s. During the 1980s, he worked for Emco Light in the Quad Cities. He later worked for Case New Holland in Fargo, N.D., where he retired in 2008. After retiring, he relocated back to Morton in 2010. He also worked for Donaldson Manufacturing in Chillicothe, Mo., from 1998 to 2004.

Martin was a member of the National Rifle Association.

He enjoyed the outdoors. He and his wife would often visit the cabin in Buyck, Minn., where he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

A celebration of life service will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton, with the Rev. Robert Martin officiating.

Cremation has been accorded.
