Herbert John Gilliland Jr., 92, of Pekin, passed away at 4:45 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, at Pekin Manor.
Born May 30, 1924, in Kirksville, Mo., to Herbert John Sr. and Emma Barbara Jibben Gilliland, he married Betty Lou Yocum April 4, 1945, in Baltimore, Md. She died June 23, 2015, in Pekin.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are one daughter, Vicki Gilliland-Small of Pekin; one son, Dr. David (Joy Petri) Gilliland of Springfield; four grandchildren, Jessica (Marc) Meeks and Dr. Maegan (Jonathan Wright) Gilliland Wright, both of Peoria, Rich Davis of Pekin and Taylor Gilliland of Springfield; four great-grandchildren, Austin Sherman, Mazzy Sherman, Michael (Hannah) Davis and Cristian Davis; and two great-great-grandchildren, John and Madilyn.
A United States Army veteran of World War II, he served from March 29, 1943 to Feb. 10, 1946. He was a toxic gas handler stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and attained the rank of Private First Class.
Herb worked at Keystone Steel and Wire Company in Bartonville for 31 years, retiring as a fuel engineer. Herb’s retirement job was serving the community through his work at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory as a faithful funeral assistant for 24 years.
He was a charter and devoted member of Faith Baptist Church in Pekin, where he was a former Deacon, Trustee, Sunday school teacher, bus worker and served on the original building committee. He had been a member of the Tuckabatchee Sunday school class. He was the “official popcorn maker” for church activities.
Herb enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling especially to Branson, playing table games and was a collector. He was a St. Louis Cardinal’s fan.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26, at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.
