A Pekin man was charged in court Monday with sexually abusing two pre-teen girls for more than 1 1/2 years.

Bond was set at $150,000 when Joseph Yntema, 31, was charged with five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Because the alleged victims were under age 12, each count carries twice the crime’s maximum punishment of seven years in prison.

Yntema committed acts of sexual conduct with his victims between January 2015 and last September, according to a prosecutor’s court affidavit, which was heavily redacted to protect the children’s identities.

He was arrested Friday after a warrant was issued the prior day. His next court date in the case is set for Jan. 5.

Yntema’s only other criminal convictions in Tazewell County came in 2006 for misdemeanor battery and last July for driving under the influence of alcohol.
