For the residents of Hunter’s Glen in Washington, it can be hard to keep up with all the changes in the young subdivision.
New families are moving in all the time, and those families are growing.
“We’ve had eight births here in the last four months,” said Jaden’s Way resident, Kelly Juergens. She and her husband Dean are expecting their second child in a couple of months.
One way the Juergens and others in their subdivision keep up with the growing neighborhood is an annual kickball game.
Saturday marked the third annual Hunter’s Glen kickball gathering.
“Kickball is a great game; you don’t have to have many skills. We’re just out there to have a good time,” said Dean Juergens.
About 40 people, ages newborn to 73, gathered behind the homes in a retention field Saturday afternoon to socialize and play kickball.
Not only are not many skills required, the game is easy to understand.
“The No. 1 rule of kickball is there are no rules,” said Todd Reuber to the group lined up to be divided into teams.
The game typically lasts for hours until everyone is too tired to continue.
Hunter Berry has played kickball all three years.
“I’m pretty good at kickball. Last year, I got a lot of people out,” said the 11-year-old.
For Tyler Tidwell, 5, the best part of the day is getting to play the game with his dad.
The kickball gathering, said Kelly Juergens, is a lot less effort than a block party.
“We don’t cook anything and we don’t need permission from the city.”
But despite the simplicity of the game, Dean Juergens, who double-cut the field and spray painted lines for Saturday’s game, said the annual gathering is evolving.
“It gets bigger and bigger every year. Next year, we’ll have a lighted field.”
“It’s just a great day, and it’s really what living in Washington is all about: enjoying the community and having a relationship with your neighbors,” said Kelly Juergens.
