What has been somewhat of a local secret for about two years has now hit the big-time. Dr. Paul Kinsinger’s Piggy Paste has gone national.

Piggy Paste first hit the shelves at Lindy’s Downtown Market in January 2010. Since then, nearly 1,000 tubes of the toenail fungus cure has been purchased from those shelves.

“I took it to Walgreens in East Peoria about a month later,” Kinsinger said. “Walgreens believes that if they have a $30 item and they sell six a month, that’s an incredible success.”

After an article ran in the East Peoria Times-Courier, East Peoria Walgreens sold 48 tubes in one month.

In March 2010, Piggy Paste was made available to all central Illinois Walgreens stores.

“It kind of sat there for a month because I didn’t have advertising,” Kinsinger said. “Then April 9 of last year, it was in the Journal Star and the 12 Walgreens within the area sold 2,200 tubes in two weeks. And they haven’t looked back.”

After success in the Peoria area, Piggy Paste went to Bloomington. After success in Bloomington, it went to Springfield.

In March, Piggy Paste became available throughout southern Illinois and parts of Missouri in 284 Walgreens.

“It went to those stores in March; we figured out which advertisements worked the best in April and May and then in June and July it started selling like crazy in St. Louis,” Kinsinger said.

That success led to Kinsinger’s product going national in 7,800 stores in October. Currently about 800 tubes a day are sold, which Kinsinger said is “OK.”

“We went national on Oct. 1,” he said. “And just like in Peoria, it kind of sat there for a month because we didn’t have national media. Then, Oct. 30, we were in half of the Parade magazines; last week we were in half of the USA Today Weekly magazines. This week there’s a really good ad (in Parade).”

Kinsinger said he is hopeful this advertisement will improve the product’s sales.

“With the data that’s from St. Louis, we just think we should be selling more,” he said. “But people are warming up to it.”

Washingtonians, however, are convinced of its success. More than 2,400 tubes have sold in Washington alone.

The idea for Piggy Paste came when Kinsinger read about a toenail fungus study in a medical journal.

“It said if you have toenail fungus, you could put your toes in white vinegar and water solution for 10 minutes everyday and in nine months, your toenails are fine. I think most people are a little too busy to spend 10 minutes doing a chemistry experiment every day.”

Kinsinger, a hospice medical director for Methodist, decided to create the hospice penetrating gel to make the treatment easier to use.

When applied to the toenail cuticle and covered with a Band-Aid® for 12 to 16 weeks results can be seen.

“It works about 80 percent of the time,” Kinsinger said. “And it’s better than anything else that’s out there and it’s easier to use. It’s basically a home remedy that we made easy,” he said.

The paste, made of vinegar and a component of Listerine in a hospice penetrating gel, sells for $29.99 for 24 grams, or a 12- to 16-week supply.

“Walgreens has just been incredible,” he said. “They were the risk takers. They allowed a store manager to basically take my product as a local vendor and the other corporations didn’t allow that.”

Kinsinger said Piggy Paste’s success is not really a surprise.

“There are 14 other over-the-counter products for thick, ugly toenails right now,” he said. “I’m outselling all of them together five to one. I’ve already taken over the market.

“I knew after six months that there’s nothing else out there like this. I knew then. And I like how it’s going forward, I really do.”

Locally, Piggy Paste can be purchased at stores including Lindy’s, Running Central, Hyvee, Walgreens and Kroger.

Kinsinger said he is currently negotiating with officials from CVS and Walmart.
