PEKIN — Stone Soup Shakespeare will give a free performance of "The Taming of the Shrew" at 6 p.m. June 3 at Mineral Springs Park, 1701 Court St.
The show is part of the Shakespeare in the Park Tour, with presentations from May to early June throughout Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Wisconsin.
One of Shakespeare's favorite problem plays, "The Taming of the Shrew" finds the Minola sisters, Katherina and Bianca, linked as the younger cannot wed until the older sister is married. Strong-willed Kate is a bit too much for most of Padua's suitors, who are enamored with Bianca's bewitching beauty. When a stranger — Petruchio — comes to town who is as strange as Kate is quick-witted, the two seem perfectly fitted, but are they?
Will Bianca ever marry? Will Katherina find happiness? Will Petruchio win the final bet on the fairest wife? Will Shakespeare's play about taming women find a home in 2018?
The ensemble will engage audience with song and dance as well as Shakespeare.
In keeping with the spirit of the children’s story "Stone Soup," from which the company takes its name, audience members are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, which will be collected and donated to local food banks. In addition, audience members are encouraged to bring their own picnics to share with their friends and family while enjoying the evening of entertainment and community.
