Washington Community High School athletes are not slowing down after a strong campaign in 2009-10.
With top-three finishes in seven of the eight varsity sports this fall, the Panthers trail Metamora by only 600 points in the unofficial standings in the Mid-Illini Conference All-Sports leaderboard.
WCHS is coming off its best showing since 2005-06. Last year, the school trailed the Redbirds by 900 points at this stage, so it has narrowed the gap. The Panthers' 4,600 points thus far is way ahead of the 3,900 they possessed one year ago.
The volleyball (first place) and football (tie-second) teams were the latest WCHS progams to post top-tier final rankings. Boys golf and girls cross country both were second, while girls golf, boys soccer and girls tennis all finished third.
Morton currently is second, a mere 50 points ahead of the Panthers.
On tap in the winter are boys and girls basketball and wrestling. If WCHS can outscore Metamora in the second season — a distinct possibility — the spring will be very interesting.
Even if the Panthers do not catch the eight-time defending All-Sports champion Redbirds, they still could make a run at the No. 2 spot and continue their ascent in the conference.
