EAST PEORIA — Marcellus “Mart” “Zim” Zimmerman, 94, of East Peoria, formerly of Washington died at 4:49 a.m. Sunday, December 19, 2010 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

Born April 19, 1916 in Muskegon, Mich., to Albert and Louisa Zimmerman, he married Gladys L. Stiles May 23, 1936 in East Peoria.  

Surviving are his wife of 74 years of East Peoria, three daughters, Bette L. (Theodore, deceased) Sieg of Washington, Marlene K. (Charles, Sr.) Passero of Ocean Pines, Md., and Cynthia L. (Eugene) Smick of East Peoria five grandchildren, Katherine (William) Allen, Charles Passero Jr., Kristina Venable, Matthew (Christie) Smick, and Brandon (Christy) Smick, nine great-grandchildren, Barton Allen, Kayla (Joshua) Carroll, Charles Passero, Grace Venable, James Venable, Adelynn Smick, Tyas Smick, Owen Smick, and Jenna Smick.  He was expecting his first great-great grandchild in February.

He was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters and one grandson, Mark Sieg.

Marcellus served in Paris, France with the US Army during World War II.

He worked at Caterpillar Tractor Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1978.  His career encompassed being a tool maker, supervision, and planning.  His nickname at work was “Zim”.  He was a volunteer fireman for the Northern Tazewell Fire Department.  Mart loved the Chicago Cubs and watching Bradley Braves basketball.  He also enjoyed family, traveling, fishing, and working on cars.  He also loved his bird “Skeeter.”

Services for Marcellus will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington.  Pastor William Allen will officiate. 

Visitation will be from 12-1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memory Gardens in rural Morton.

Memorials may be made to Northern Tazewell Fire Department or a charity of the Donor’s Choice.
