Tutors are needed for the nearly 7,000 Tazewell County adults who need help learning basic reading, writing, math and English as a second language.

YWCA Adult Literacy will conduct certification training for six weeks, beginning 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at the YWCA of Pekin, 815 Buena Vista.

All participants will attend a volunteer orientation Tuesday, an introduction to adult learning Sept. 2 and sessions on setting goals, planning lessons and assessing progress Oct. 5 and Oct. 7.

In addition, they will attend four sessions on instructional methods and materials in one of three strands: literacy on Tuesdays, Sept. 7-28; math on Wednesdays, Sept. 8-29; and English as a second language on Thursdays, Sept. 9-30.

Participants must attend eight sessions in order to become certified. No previous teaching experience or training is needed.

Cost is $15 and pre-registration is required by calling 347-2104, ext. 40.

Following training, volunteer tutors are paired with an adult leaner for twice-weekly tutoring sessions arranged at convenient times and places. All materials and supplies are provided.

YWCA Adult Literacy is the only such program for adults in Tazewell County. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the project is made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library, a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy. It is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America.
